Discovery Primary Science Activities

18th Apr 2018

Room 4 have been busy completeing a number of Science Experiments recently. We are applying for the Discover Primary Science Certificate.

Experiment 1: Dancing Raisins

Equipment:

  • a jar of water
  • a jar of fizzy clear drink
  • a handful of raisins

Activity:

  1. Predict what will happen
  2. Drop some raisins into the jar of water
  3. Drop some raisins into the jar of freshly opened fizzy drink
  4. Observe and make note of the reactions between the water and raisisns and fizzy drink and raisins

Results:

  • The raisins in the water sunk to the bottom of the jar
  • The raisins in the fizzy drink rise to the surface, sink, rise again, etc. dancing up and down

Conclusions:

The raisins are heavier than the drink so they sink to the bottom. At the bottom of the fizzy drink they collect bubbles of carbon dioxide and now the raisins and bubbles are lighter than the drink so they rise to the surface.

When they reach the surface the gas bubbles burst and the raisins sink; then they collect more gas bubbles etc.

This continued as long as the drink was fizzy.
