Discovery Primary Science Activities 2
18th Apr 2018
In Room 4 we are conducting lots of experiments! We are learning about Space and this week we looked at how to launch a rocket. We had so much fun. We are super scientists and rocket launchers!
Rocket Launch
Equipment:
- large balloons
- string
- drinking straw
- clothes-peg
- sellotape
- 2 chairs
Skills:Investigating and experimenting
Activity:
- Make predicitions about what will happen
- Blow up a balloon and let it go
- Note what happens
- Now control the path of the balloon by connecting it to a piece of string
- Pull the string through a drinking straw
- Tie the string to two chairs and pull it tight
- Blow up a balloon and keep the air in it using a clothes peg
- Using sellotape attach the balloon to the side of the straw
- Pull the whole thing back to the beginning of the string and take off the clothes peg....launch your rocket!
Results:
- The first balloon flew all over the room when the air was released
- The second balloon whizzed along the string and flew in a straight path
Conlcusion:
The air coming out of the back of the balloon pushes the balloon forward. this is how rockets work- the hot burning gases rushing out the back of the rockets push them forwards.
First we made predictions
Then we started the experiment.
Lastly we recorded our results
